Yay! Italy!

This hand dryer in the toilets never ceases to amaze me...u stick ur hand in for 10 seconds and ur hands are completely dry!!

Becca, Me and Becks in The Hive (GUU-Glasgow University Union? Uni's club)

Me and Becks
Carol (also from our kitchen), Emma, Me and Debbie

Fun Facts:

The letter Z is pronounced Zed here.

Cue means line. Ex: Look how long the cue is to get in the club. OR A coach broke down on the motorway and there was a long cue of cars behind it <--I heard that on the radio today.

Just when I thought I was understanding accents really well, I find that I still look at ppl w/a blank stare on my face.

Ex) Becca: Do you want to come chat for a while? (I thought she said crank or chank or i dunno. Dang Irish accent lol)

Man at check out: Would you like a wee bag? (As usual, the accent plus the rarely used word wee confused me)

Moi is hello in Finnish!

Becca and Emma's attempt at an american accent: saying "like" 40 times in a sentence.

I'm so excited, Katie and I leave for Italy in the morning and won't be back until the 21st! I'm really nervous, since we don't know Italian, but I think English is pretty universal in Europe. We're going first to Rome, then Tuscany, Florence, Pisa, and finally Venice, and this week is the carnival where everyone wears those masks! It should be amazingly fun!

I hate Fridays. At home Friday and Saturday are the nights to go out and do stuff...they don't do anything on the weekends here, its so weird. At least my group doesn't, they say they have schoolwork to do, and Emma is a postlady and delivers mail on Saturday from 6am-2pm, so she goes to bed early on Fridays, then sleeps on Saturday. So I'm doing nothing right now. Bleh.

I went to the grocery store Wednesday. I was standing in line when Becca and Emma walked in and asked if I wanted to go to the Cinema tonight. I said sure, and we went to buy the tickets before heading back to CX (Cairncross). On wednesdays, if u have orange mobile phone network, u can get 2 tickets for 6 pounds, and usually its 4 pounds each. Unfortunately, Paula bailed at the last minute (with her we would have had an even number: Me, Becca, Emma, Debbie, Becks), so I had to pay the 4 pounds, but it was only an extra pound. When we got back, I sat in the kitchen with them for almost 2 hours. We ate lunch, chatted and had tea (I finally gave in to Becca, who wanted me to so badly drink tea). Then we went to do some work, I really needed to read b4 we left for the theatre.

Finally we went to the Cinema that night to see The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. On the way, I made a bet w/Becks, who always cries at the end of sad movies, that if she didn't cry I lost my vetoes in my makeover (they get way too excited about the makeover). I reluctantly agreed, they can't possibly do anything bad to me. It was kinda a long movie, and there was an intermission in the middle! The theatre was great, it was leather armchairs and we got a bottle of wine and each had a glass! I felt so sophisticated! Unfortunately we didn't get back to CX until after midnight, since we had to walk 30mins. Beck's didn't cry, so I lost. Now Emma seems stuck on the idea that I should try contacts. I said I don't like anything near my eye and she was like, Oh! I'll put them in for u! She'll probably poke my eye out.

Yesterday, I really needed to read my book, since we were going to discuss it on Friday at seminar. I was still only halfway thru, and I had been reading it since the castle trip, so it was a slow read. I really was motivated to read it, I just had two lectures, a seminar, then a film screening (Pleasantville) so I didn't get back til almost 8pm. I walk in and Paula says they're going out tonight, if I want to come. Of course I said yes! I let Paula straighten my hair, which I love it straight, but then she puts it back and uses a ridiculous amount of hairspray and my hair gets all sticky. I could tell Becca was dying to do my makeup, so I let her put mascara and eyeliner on. They were all impressed at how long my eye lashes are and kept staring at them all night. Its strange the styles they have here, like none I've ever seen in the states. We left around 11pm to go to The Hive. Paula went ahead to Fabian's, who lives across the street from The Hive, so I went with Emma, Becca, Becks and Kathleen (lives downstairs). The one bad thing about these girls, is they tend to get lost from each other, so I always try to stay w/one person. Last night I stayed w/Becks cuz I had her ID and money in my purse. Becca and Emma went to go dance at one point, and Becks and I didn't know where they went, so we stayed in our spot. Then, a guy from India came over to us and started to talk to us, and he just wouldn't go away. Finally Emma and Becca came back and asked us to go dance. Later, the Indian found Becks and asked for her number, and she was like sorry I dont give out my number. Unfortunately he gave her his. Needless to say she threw it away lol.

The club closed at 2am, and we were asked to leave lol. The last song they always seem to play at the clubs is Journey's Midnight Train. Everyone here knows it and the DJ turns the music off and everyone sings the words! We finally left (minus Paula who went to Fabian's and minus Kathleen who left w/some guy she knew.) When we got back to CX, I ended up sitting in the Kitchen w/Becca, Becks and Emma until 3:30am talking. It was great! However, I did not get my reading done for seminar. Oh well. It was well worth it!

I have to say, I am beyond happy at the moment. I have been having so much fun! I'm actually really gonna miss them this week while I'm in Italy :( But we're gonna do the makeover when I get back!

Ciao!

  1. Haha, at least you have interesting excuses for skipping on your schoolwork. After this makeover I expect pictures. And really, contacts aren't all that bad once you get used to them.

  3. Stay true to yourself and just be you. Makeovers are a fun way to expand and reinvent yourself but do it for you---not in order to be accepted. Your friends love you for you not for the clothes or makeup you wear! Have fun in Italy--like Hannah said--we want lots of pics!
